Chapter 1: The Devil Bicycle Horn

Hello and welcome to the blog!

Let me introduce you to the first item I am choosing to debut from my coveted collection of antiques, thrifted-treasures and oddities: The Devil Bicycle Horn.

I spotted little Lucifer-head here a few years ago at an antique store in southern-Maine for the appropriate price of $6.66, and just had to have it. While at the time of purchasing I didn’t even own a bike to attach it to – I just couldn’t pass it up. Having never seen a bicycle horn like this before, I was struck with curiosity.

Had I stumbled upon the (anti) Holy Grail of novelty bike accessories? Was this item mass-produced, or a one-of-a-kind creation? Did I inherit an unbreakable, horrific curse; a deal with the Devil, through buying this quirky oddity.

After some sleuthing online and an email exchange with a representative from Archie McPhee, I was able to track down the product and some of its information (thanks again Raven.)

Manufactured in 2000, the “Speed Demon” Devil Bicycle Horn was designed and sold through Accoutrements, which would later be known worldwide as Archie McPhee, the famous Seattle-based toy store that makes those rubber chickens, horse-head masks, and bacon/pickle air-fresheners.

As the original ad states, Satan’s egg-shaped, coral-red, vinyl cranium is adorned with two white horns, along with a devilishly handsome, pencil-thin mustache (really digging those sideburns too.) The item sold out and discontinued around 2004, but you can still find them floating around antique stores, yard-sales, on internet auctions, or the handlebars of your local Satanic cyclist.

I love this thing. It’s crude and silly, and I’ll never, ever put it on my bicycle because I’m certain someone will steal it. Since purchasing it resides safely in my home, occasionally peeking out from a vintage coffee-mug on display or resting against a Stephen King book on the bookshelf – and that’s how it shall stay.

Thanks for reading, and happy hunting.
